Bon Iver, Jim James, Zach Galifianakis Collaborate on Book Project

Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Zach Galifianakis, Danny DeVito, Pixies' Frank Black, Tom Waits and Nick Cave highlight the dozens of musicians, actors and visual artists who collaborated on Stories for Ways and Means, an elaborate book project conceived by record label Waxploitation founder Jeff Antebi. Proceeds benefit Room to Read and Pencils of Promise, two non-profit organizations dedicated to children's literacy.

The 350-page book features illustrated stories from 30 songwriters and visual artists, and guest narrators voiced accompanying short films for each. Other participating songwriters include Joey Bada$$, Laura Marling, Devendra Banhart, Alison Mosshart (the Kills, the Dead Weather), Kathleen Hanna, Matthew Dear, Will Oldham, Gary Numan, Satomi Matsuzaki (Deerhoof), Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Moonface), Del the Funky Homosapien, Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), John Vanderslice and Gibby Haynes (the Butthole Surfers).

Featured narrators also include Nick Offerman, King Krule, Lauren Lapkus, Andre Royo and Phil Lamarr.

A trailer for Stories for Ways and Means hypes the project as "an unprecedented literary mixtape … 10 years in the making" and features a barrage of psychedelic imagery. The book is available for pre-order as a standard hardback edition and exclusive signed version (limited to 100 total) via the project's official site. The project will be released in 2017, though no specific date has been announced.

Despite benefitting children's literacy, the book itself is geared toward readers over age 17. According to a press release, the project features "outre art, weird images, graphic displays of nasty stuff and cuss words."
